Hello Lexi and Devin. What great comments....and Devin - a great question you raise. What were those little dog like characters?...I'm not sure either, but I'll tell you some of my thoughts, if you like.

I think the dogs were supposed to be like you and me. I think they represented real people (with the lyric when they first appear coming from the oppressive factory "[the animals in the zoo] look a lot like everybody") - and that this is a fable of some kind to do with your spirit rising above the mean and dirty world of stuff.

They go through three metamorphoses, the first is like their souls flying up to the Eskimos dirigible, or ark ("seeds" in the lyrics), then they grow into plants, and then the flowers bloom back into being dogs. But clearly not the same down trodden dogs we first met!

Finally they get handed back plants, and descend back down to into the dirty world - and transform it into something beautiful (the explosion which results in that wonderful old glistening tree). In my opinion, the same world, but made new by the fresh evolved dogs.

There's so much wonderful allegory here, it would be shame to analyze it to death. So, you know what, Devin? I think your interpretation of "dogs going into war to fight for something they care about" is a fine interpretation. Very fine indeed!

Kind of it makes me think of - well, it's kind of funny but, what were those things that were getting the plants - dogs? It makes me think of dogs going into war to fight for something they care about.

Thanks for the culinary treat!!! As you mentioned, I'm always seeking out interesting new flavors and that is one of the coolest completely new flavors I've experienced in quite awhile. There are frequently new things I have that I love (we recently had authentic northern New Mexico enchiladas with red sauce prepared by Kirsten Rehorn - a New Mexico native). They can blow me away and be extremely enjoyable, but they are usually somewhere on a taste continuum that I'm already aware of - exciting new combinations of flavors I know or ingredients I've never tasted but are reminescent of related tastes from more familiar fare. But Marmite is a completely new flavor type to my pallette and I loved the aggressive, big flavor it has. It seems to start with an innocent saltiness, but then quickly blooms into a deep, slightly sweet, slightly creamy, very earthy flavor that barks up a totally new flavor tree for me. I'd have to say my favorite was Marmite on Toast. I can see myself having that for breakfast regularly - if I could only get my hands on some. I'm paying big bucks for the next batch of that you can smuggle into the States, Phil...

Thanks for picking that up, Phil! I just want to make sure that is correctly attributed. I think it is a little more of a paraphrase than a quote and it was by Stuart Halloway (here's an out-of-date bio: http://www.nofluffjuststuff.com/speaker_view.jsp?speakerId=6). His company is Relevance (http://relevancellc.com/) and he is a great Rails developer who was previously a big figure in the java developer world.

Phil! Trying out google reader - just added your blog. Saw the persona thing but no accompanying text and I can't comment on it. Says you just posted it a couple of minutes ago. Beautifully easy to find your blog by searching in the reader, BTW.
